Brewing Tea for Parrots
Both Parrot Tranquility Tea and Foraging Floral Mix can be offered dry in suitable foraging activities or brewed as a cooled herbal infusion.
Parrot Herbal Tranquility Tea is designed to complement calm, low-stimulation care routines. While it may be offered dry, brewing the blend creates the herbal infusion experience for which it was formulated.
Floral Foraging Mix can be offered dry for enrichment and exploration, or brewed as a cooled floral infusion.
Suggested Brewing Instructions
Use 2–3 teaspoons of dried blend per 1 litre of water.
-
Add the dried blend to freshly boiled water.
-
Cover and steep for 5–10 minutes.
-
Strain if desired.
-
Allow the infusion to cool completely before offering it in a clean dish.
-
Replace regularly, or sooner if soiled with food, droppings or debris.
The blend can be brewed at the lower or higher end of the suggested range according to individual preference. Use the same tea-to-water ratio when making smaller or larger amounts.
Scaling guide
Tea Amount(Total) | Dried Tea |
|---|---|
4L(4000mL) | 8-12 teaspoons(2-3 Australian tablespoons) |
1L(1000mL) | 2-3 teaspoons |
600mL | 1¼–1¾ teaspoons |
500mL | 1–1½ teaspoons |
300mL | ¾–1 teaspoon |
250mL | ½–¾ teaspoon |
Australian measure note: 1 Australian tablespoon equals 4 teaspoons. If using an overseas tablespoon measure, use teaspoons for accuracy.
Serving one or more parrots
Prepare only the amount your household is likely to use, or scale the recipe to suit your birds’ usual bowl sizes.
For homes with more than one parrot, divide the cooled infusion between bowls in proportion to their normal capacity. This helps keep the strength broadly consistent across bowls while allowing different bowl sizes to receive different volumes.
For example, a 300 mL bowl receives approximately half the amount prepared for a 600 mL bowl. Larger bowls can receive a greater share of the brewed tea.
Regular use
When brewed and handled as directed, either blend may be offered regularly as part of a companion parrot’s established care routine.
Individual birds vary in their preferences and responses. Introduce any new botanical blend gradually and observe your bird. Adjust the amount prepared to suit your household, your bird’s usual routine and the amount they willingly consume.
Storage & freshness
Offer brewed tea fresh in a clean dish.
If you prepare more than you need, keep the unused portion separate from your bird’s dish. Once cooled, transfer it to a clean, covered container and refrigerate promptly. Use refrigerated brewed tea within 24 hours.
Do not return tea that has already been offered in a bird’s dish to the stored batch. Discard any tea that has become soiled or shows a change in smell or appearance.
Prompt cooling, clean covered storage and a conservative 24-hour use window are sensible precautions for an unpasteurised herbal infusion. Brewed tea left at room temperature for extended periods can support microbial growth; general food-safety guidance recommends chilling promptly and using refrigerated tea within a short period.
